CRISTINA LUGO, MA PIT
Counselor
I was born and raised in Walla Walla, WA, and have always had a deep fascination with understanding human behavior. I began my academic journey in New York, earning a bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science at Hilbert College. Toward the end of my studies, I realized that my true passion was not only in solving crimes, but in understanding the why behind them. That realization led me to pursue a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology at California Baptist University.
After graduation, I worked at the Washington State Penitentiary in the education department, where I had the opportunity to collaborate with a psychology associate and incarcerated individuals to develop a victim awareness program. This initiative focused on helping participants reflect on their backgrounds, accept responsibility, and set meaningful goals for their release. It was a powerful experience that deepened my commitment to working with individuals impacted by trauma.
In 2021, I completed a postbaccalaureate program in Clinical Psychology at Fielding Graduate University and was later accepted into their doctoral program in General Psychology, which I am on track to complete in Fall 2025. My long-term career goals include working with highly traumatized populations, including incarcerated individuals, as well as serving as a forensic evaluator.
Joining Thrive represents an exciting new chapter for me. I am eager to broaden my clinical experience by working with a very different population than I am used to and to contribute meaningfully to the team and those we serve.

My Education and Experience
I hold my Associate License in Mental Health Counseling for the State of Washington (LMHCA), and am a Qualified Mental Health Associate in Oregon (QMHA). Since 2023, I have provided compassionate mental health services as a counselor in Washington State.
I hold my Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Wisconsin at Stout, which I earned in 2020 (MSRC). (Rehabilitation counseling involves workplace injury, workers’ compensation, disability, accommodations, working with elderly populations, and much more.) I worked as Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for three years before I found my true calling for the counseling aspect of that profession. I then fully transitioned into mental health counseling, and have worked as a counselor in both public and private organizations in Washington.
I hold my undergraduate degree in English Literature from Portland State University, which I earned in 2010 (BA) with minor in film studies.
I speak intermediate Spanish, having studied the language abroad in Costa Rica and Spain.
My Approach and Style
I am open to many counseling approaches, and am always learning. I primarily utilize Rogerian, strengths-based, person-centered therapy. I provide person-centered, holistic counseling with a focus on unconditional positive regard for the client. As my good friend once stated, “It always feels like Josh is on your side”. I am grateful for this compliment, and I hope you find that throughout your treatment, I will always support you and be on your side.
Our sessions are non-judgmental, open, and accepting. I listen, reflect, and try not to speak too much while providing new perspectives. I believe in transparency; honesty; addressing the moment; and assisting you in discovering truths about yourself. I have been told that I am easy to work with, and am a good listener. I hope you will agree!
I understand that you are a unique individual with many experiences different to mine. I employ cultural sensitivity in my counseling, and never assume anything about a client. I will never judge you. I seek to understand your motivations for your choices and actions. We will explore many positive aspects of your life. I am a natural optimist, and enjoy helping clients increase their gratitude.
